Some common words

 Let us see how many of the common words we know. The pronoun I in Sanskrit is    ----------- ( मम, त्वं, अहं, मे ) Which of the following words does not mean water? -----( जलं ,वारी, पानीय, मेघ )  Which of the following is not an animal?-----( सिंह:, मूषक:, मूर्ख:, मार्जाल:  ) What does the word प्रभात​:  mean? -----( beautiful, ugly, morning, evening ) Which of these words mean she sees ------(पश्यति ,प्श्यामि, पश्य, अप्श्यत् ) Which of the following is not part of a plant ? ----(फलं ,पुष्पं ,पर्णं ,पृथ्वी)
 कृतस्य करणं नास्ति मृतस्य मरणं तथा |  गतस्य शोचनं नास्ति ह्येतद्वेदविदां मतं ||  You can't undo what is already done. Just like a person who is already dead doesn't have death. There is no use of repenting what has already passed. This is the opinion of people who know the vedas.

Few more sentences

तं मुनिं पश्य | Look at that sage. स: मुनि: प्रातर्  एव उत्तिष्ठति| That sage wakes up early in the morning.  स: प्रातर् उत्थाय किं करोति? What does he do waking up early?  स: प्रातर् उत्थाय तप: आचरति | After waking up, he does tapas. Now let us look at these sentences in detail. The word पश्य means see, look. It is in imperative tense - आज्ञार्थक - लोट् लकार .  So how do you say "You read a book" in Sanskrit? त्वं पुस्तकं पठ|  If you want to say "You are reading a book" - you use present tense. त्वं पुस्तकं पठसि| Look at another sentence in imperative tense. You drink  water and eat the fruit.  त्वं जलं पिब, फलं च खाद|  Now let us look at second sentence. Here the word  प्रातर् means morning. The word for evening is सायं  Let us look at some more morning sentences. अद्य प्रभाते अहं चित्रं रचितवती|Today morning I drew a picture.  I did. Today, tomorrow and yesterday

     तस्य भ्राता शहरं न गच्छति| His brother does not go to city. Here the word तस्य is the genitive form of pronoun स: - his Now the same word in feminine gender is तस्या:      तस्या: भगिनी शहरं न गच्छति |  Her sister does not go to the city. Now if I want to say "my son went to village"? The genitive case of first person singular is मम - my     मम सुत: ग्रामम् अगच्छत् |  Notice that the verb is  अगच्छत् because the sentence is in past tense.  Now let us say "Your father will come tomorrow".    तव पिता श्व: आगमिष्यति | भवत: पिता श्व: आगमिष्यति| तव means your. It is genitive form of युष्मद्. भवत: is more respectful term - it is similar to आप का in Hindi.  श्व: is tomorrow. And ह्य: is yesterday.  परश्व: is day after tomorrow and परह्य: is day before yesterday.  ह्य: अहं गृहे आसाम् |  Yesterday I was at home.  आसाम् is the past tense form of अस्मि  We know yesterday and tomorrow....

ओदनम् and other words

Let us start today's post with a sentence. त्वम् अत्र शीघ्रम् ओदनम् आनय| You bring cooked rice here soon. Now we know that त्वम् means you.  The word अत्र means here. It is an indeclinable - अव्यय- the word which remains same in all numbers, genders and cases etc. If only the complete language was like that :( So if अत्र is here, what is तत्र ? Of course it means there. And कुत्र is ? Yeah, it is where and सर्वत्र means everywhere. देव: कुत्र अस्ति ? अत्र अस्ति| तत्र अस्ति| सर्वत्र अस्ति| Where is God? He is here. He is there. He is everywhere. Now if you want, you can replace the word God with plastic. :) or for that matter corruption. शीघ्रम् means soon or fast. Now can you tell me what is शिघ्राहारमन्दिर ? Yes, it means fast food restaurant. बहवः जना: शिघ्राहारं न क्रीणन्ति|           Many people do not buy fast food.  This is the common and well read children's story of turtle and swans. I am copying the text from NCERT book Ruchira and will be translating the story in few posts. अस्ति मगधदेशे फुल्लोत्पलनाम सर:| तत्र संकटविकटनामकौ हंसौ निवसत: | कम्बुग्रीवनामा तयो: मित्रम् एक: कूर्म: तत्रैव प्रतिवसति स्म | In the kingdom of Magadha, there was a lake called Phollottama.
