Short story - A hunter and a tiger
There was a certain hunter called Chanchala | |
पक्षिमृगादीनां ग्रहणेन सः स्वीयां जीविकां निर्वहति स्म| | He used to lead his life by hunting birds, animals etc. |
एकदा सः वने जालं विस्तीर्य गृहम् आगतवान् | | Once he spread the net in the forest and came home. |
अन्यस्मिन् दिवसे प्रातःकाले यदा चञ्चलः वनं गतवान् तदा सः दृष्टवान् यत् तेन विस्तारिते जाले दौर्भाग्याद् एकः व्याघ्रः बद्धः आसीत्| | Another day when Chanchal went to forest, then he saw that in his spread net, due to bad luck a tiger was caught. |
सोऽचिन्तयत् "व्याघ्रः मां खादिष्यति अत एव पलायनं करणीयम्"| | He thought "Tiger will eat me. So I have to escape (run away)." |
व्याघ्रः न्यवेदयत् " भो मानव, कल्याणं भवतु ते| | Tiger requested "Hey human, let good things happen to you" |
यदि त्वं मां मोचयिष्यसि, तर्हि अहं त्वां न हनिष्यामि|" | If you release me (from this net), then I will not kill you. |
तदा सः व्याधः व्याघ्रं जालात् बहिः निरसारयत्| | Then that hunter removed the tiger from the net. |
व्याघ्रः क्लान्तः आसीत्| | The tiger was exhausted. |
सोऽवदत् " पिपासुः अहम्| | He told " I am thirsty". |
नद्याः जलमानीय मम पिपासां शमय|" | Bring river water, quench my thirst. |
व्याघ्रः जलं पीत्वा पुनः व्याधमवदत्| | After drinking water, the tiger told the hunter. |
"शान्ता मे पिपासा| साम्प्रतं बुभुक्षितोऽस्मि|" | My thirst is quenched. Now I am hungry". |
इदानीम् अहं त्वां खादिष्यामि|" | Now I will eat you. |

Here are the meanings of the words.
कशचित् - a certain चञ्चलो नाम - named Chanchala व्याध: - hunter आसीत् - was (past tense of अस्ति). |
पक्षिमृगादीनां - पक्षि - bird मृग - animal आदीनां - etc.(acc) ग्रहणेन - with catching स्वीयां - his own जीविकां - life निर्वहति स्म - lead his life. |
एकदा - once जालं - net विस्तीर्य - having spread गृहम् - home आगतवान् - he had come. |
अन्यस्मिन् - another दिवसे - day प्रातःकाले - in the morning यदा - when वनं - forest गतवान् - had gone तदा सः - then he दृष्टवान् - saw यत् - which तेन - by him विस्तारिते - spread दौर्भाग्याद् - by bad luck एकः- one व्याघ्रः - tiger बद्धः - bound, caught आसीत् - was . |
सोऽचिन्तयत् - सः + अचिंतयत् - he thought मां - me(acc) खादिष्यति - will eat अत एव - that's why पलायनं - escape करणीयम् - have to do. |
न्यवेदयत् - नि+अवेदयत् - requested भो मानव - hey human कल्याणं - good भवतु - let happen ते - to you. |
यदि - if त्वं - you मां - me (acc) मोचयिष्यसि - will release me तर्हि - then अहं - I त्वां - you (acc) न ( not) हनिष्यामि - will kill. |
तदा - then सः - he व्याधः - hunter व्याघ्रं - tiger(acc) जालात् - from the net बहिः - outside निरसारयत् - removed. |
व्याघ्रः - tiger क्लान्तः - tired आसीत् - was |
सोऽवदत् - सः+अवदत् - he told पिपासुः - thirsty अहम् - I |
नद्याः - of the river जलमानीय - जलम्+आनीय - after bringing water मम - my पिपासां - thirst शमय - quench. |
व्याघ्रः - tiger जलं - water (acc) पीत्वा - having drunk पुनः - again व्याधमवदत् - व्याधम् + अवदत् - told hunter. |
शान्ता - calm मे - my पिपासा - thirst साम्प्रतं - now बुभुक्षितोऽस्मि - बुभुक्षितः + अस्मि - I am hungry. |
इदानीम् - now अहं - I त्वां - you (acc) खादिष्यामि - will eat. |
Notice that the entire story is in past tense. And some of the sentences use the word स्म after the present tense verb. By adding स्म, the verb changes to past tense.
