Present tense

A present tense is action which is happening right now. We call present tense as लट् लकार in Sanskrit. 

The sanskrit verbs in a sentence also change according to person and number. For example in English we say "I go" but "He goes". In Sanskrit, the verbs vary much more.

For I, it is गच्छामि but for he/she/it the verb form is गच्छति

There are 3 persons in Sanskrit language -

1. I/We is first person - called उत्तम पुरुष  in Sanskrit
2. You is second person - called मध्यम पुरुष 
3. He/she/it/they is third person - called प्रथम पुरुष

And the numbers are also different here. In Sanskrit, there are 3 numbers

1. एक वचन - singular
2. द्वि वचन - dual (two)
3. बहु वचन​ - plural

So let us look at present tense table of गम्  dhatu (go)

	एक वचन	द्वि वचन	बहु वचन​
प्रथम पुरुष	गच्छति	गच्छत​:	गच्छन्ति
मध्यम पुरुष	गच्छसि	गच्छथ:	गच्छथ
उत्तम पुरुष	गच्छामि	गच्छाव​:	गच्छाम​:

In other words,

•  the word endings for प्रथम पुरुष  are - अति    अत:  अन्ति 
• Word ending for मध्यम पुरुष are - असि अथ: अथ
• And for उत्तम पुरुष are - आमी आव: आम:

Now it is time for some example sentences.

He goes to school.

स​: विद्यालयं गच्छति ।

She goes to hospital.

सा चिकित्सालयं गछति|

Dog eats.

शुनक​: खादति |        खादति - खाद् dhatu - eat

Ram and Laxman go home. (This sentence is dual number - dvivachana)

राम लक्ष्मणौ ग्रहं ग​‍च्छत​: |

Boys go.

बाला: ग​‍च्छन्ति

Where do you go?

त्वम् कुत्र​  गच्छसि?

You both go in main road.

युवां मुख्यमार्गेण गच्छत​: |

You all go in air-route.

युयं वायुमार्गेण गच्छथ |

I go - अहं ग​‍च्छामि|
We both go - आवां गच्छाव​: |
We go - वयं ग​‍च्छाम​: |

Now let us translate some sentences into English.

1. अहं न्ृत्यामि |
2. बाला: सर्वदा  क्रीडन्ति |
3. समुद्र तटे जना: विहरन्ति |
4. अहं द्विचक्रिकया आपणं गच्छामि | (आपण - shop)

Sanskrit verb 'कृ' conjugated (meaning :do)

• करोति  कुरुतः  कुर्वन्ति
• करोषि  कुरुथः  कुरुथ
• करोमि   कुर्वः   कुर्मः

Verb भू (to become)

• भवति    भवतः   भवन््ति
• भवसि    भवथः   भवथ
• भवामि    भवावः   भवामः

• लिख् (to write) - लिखति   लिखतः  लिखन्ति  लिखसि   लिखथः  लिखथ    लिखामि   लिखावः   लिखामः
• दृश््  (to see) - पश्यति   पश्यतः  पश्यन्ति   पश्यसि   पश्यथः   पश्यथ   पश्यामि   पश्यावः   पश्यामः
• 'ज्ञा' (to know) - जानाति जानीतः जानान््ति  जानासि जानिथः जानीथ  जानामि जानीवः  जानीमः 
• क््रीङ्् (to play) - क्रीडति क्रीडतः क्रीडन्ति क्रीडसि क्रीडथः क्रीडथ क्रीडामि क्रीडावः क्रीडामः
